At the beginning of 2025, in Colombia, the Mayor’s Office of Anapoima in the department of Cundinamarca and the Royal Academy of the United Nations (Iraun Cicraun EBC-Iraun) received the award from the National Federation of Independent Journalists, Fenalprensa.
The ceremony took place on January 3 in the city of Anapoima, with the presence of academics, entrepreneurs, and journalists from the Tequendama Province in the department of Cundinamarca.
The independent journalism award for the Cundinamarca department is one of the most important prizes awarded in Colombia, recognizing citizens, entrepreneurs, academics, local and regional authorities by Fenalprensa (a journalistic association with four decades of institutional life).
“I thank Libardo Guzmán, president of Fenalprensa, for the recognition as the best Mayor of the department of Cundinamarca. This encourages us to continue working for the development of the municipality of Anapoima with a focus on tourism, education, business, and infrastructure, all through better public service quality,” said Mayor Camilo Ferro.
In support of his words, José García—a Spanish citizen and president of the Royal Academy of the United Nations (Iraun Cicraun EBC-Iraun) in Central and South America, Human Rights Diplomatic Agent, and Peace Agent—said, “We thank you for this recognition from one of the countries with the greatest economic, educational, and cultural projection in the continent.”
Currently, Colombia is not exempt from the global debate on climate change. “International cooperation is key to the present and future of the municipality of Anapoima to successfully face the challenges imposed by an interconnected society,” stated Mayor Camilo Ferro.
On the other hand, Fenalprensa’s president Libardo Guzmán considered that independent journalism in the provinces of Cundinamarca contributes to the development of the city-region with sustainable environmental impact.
Finally, José García—who has extensive experience in Europe, Africa, and Latin America—invited the journalistic community of the department of Cundinamarca to continue working rigorously and ethically to change the conversation and content surrounding climate change. «A topic that is on the global public agenda,» he noted.
